As a disciple of Saunders and Egan, I agree completely. We have similar reading tastes, for sure. I mean, Lincoln in the Bardo blows my mind every time I think about it.
Though lately I've been writing a lot of crime fiction (another love of mine) - my teachers have been writers like Saunders, Egan, DeLillo, Alice Munro, and Richard Ford.
I hate the concept of genre anyway. James Lee Burke is a beautiful writer, literary, whose work is slotted into the crime/mystery section.
